Road Recovery: Trax Program Evaluation Design & Initial Findings 2021-2024
Authors: NYU Myers School of Nursing & Applied Research Consulting Support provided by the National Mentoring Resource Center
Road Recovery’s Trax Program has been delivered to thousands of youth over the past 20 years. Our ongoing program evaluation activities, including surveys and interviews of program staff and participants, as well as direct observations by a team of external evaluators, have shown strong preliminary impacts. As this report shows, our evaluation is both rigorous and highly responsive to participant feedback and will result in even stronger program impacts as data-driven programming continues.
“This report demonstrates Road Recovery’s commitment to collecting and using data to improve program outcomes. Moreover, it highlights the commitment of the RR Trax team to eliciting input from program participants, staff, and external evaluators, and using this input to continuously improve the program. It is a rare pleasure to work with an organization, and individuals, whose commitment to quality data reflects their commitment to the youth they serve.”
-Lloyd A. Goldsamt, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing
“I love working with Gene Bowen and Jack Bookbinder at the Road Recovery Trax program. They hold themselves accountable to their constituents, always asking what they can do to improve and striving to make it happen. This report reflects that ethos through the responsive and rigorous evaluation they have implemented. By measuring processes and outcomes well, they have created a virtuous cycle of learning and growth that will deliver for the youth they serve.”

“Throughout my twenty-five years in education, I have viewed numerous school assemblies and presentations intended to motivate adolescents to make good decisions. A few of the better ones even have urged teens to reach out for help when faced with struggles. None have come close to delivering the message the way the young participants of Road Recovery have delivered it here in Warwick Valley High School. It is a message framed with honesty, integrity, and love. Most importantly, as a school instructional leader I clearly recognize the powerful connection Road Recovery outreach programs have consistently made between performance venue and curricular activities in the classroom. To any school leaders wishing to develop strong character education programs, consider placing Road Recovery at the core of your efforts. Your students will thank you.” – Richard Linkens, Principal Warwick Valley High School, Warwick, New York
